    Vintage eyewear: an oversized return

Some styles of glasses just keep coming back in... from oversized glasses to butterfly frames.

    Vintage and retro glasses

If you study the history of fashion, particularly fashion from the 20th and 21st Century, you will see a series of repeats, years later. It wasn't long ago that the red carpet was full of 1920s style dresses and pearl necklaces, that wouldn't have looked out of place nearly 100 years ago. And, for example, on a few occasions I have secretly rummaged through my Mum's wardrobe in the hope that she has kept a few pairs of high wasted Levi jeans from the 80s. In short, there isn't much that hasn't come back into fashion, and of course the same is also true for glasses and sunglasses. Of course today we call the styles that have come back from an earlier era 'vintage', and 'vintage eyewear' is no exception.

Let's begin by taking a look at this Riviera ad that show some of the eyewear trends from a previous era.

Many of these shapes are recognizable as being in and out of fashion in the past few years, particularly the current and ongoing trend for oversized glasses. The girls in the ad are wearing particularly angular, oversized glasses, as well as glasses with butterfly shaped frames.

It is the aim of Blickers to be the place to go to find alternative brands from the usual big names in shops. We therefore love different and alternative eyewear, and eyewear from small and lesser known designers. Apart from this passion, Blickers also has a collection of vintage eyewear pieces that are authentic products from their respective eras. It is the aim of Blickers to celebrate those vintage eyewear styles that at the time made history.

With the ads above in mind, lets take a look at some of the original vintage models that Blickers currently has in stock, and that are perfect to make a statement in vintage eyewear with at the moment. (To have a look at all the models in the online shop click here, or click on the names of the models below to go directly to their page).

    • HECHTER by Iber - The rounded, oversized white frame gives this model a unique vintage feel that is perfectly in line with the trend for light frames this season:

    • 2043 by Cristian Dior - This large, transparent green, angular butterfly frame is also a look that is very popular at the moment. It has an authentic vintage design that is based on the futuristic trend of the 60s.

The great thing about vintage eyewear is that glasses really are a timeless accessory. Like belts or bags, vintage eyewear can be simply the glasses your Grandmother used to wear, that can today be combined with modern clothes to create a unique and retro style. Nowadays you don't need to be 'edgy' or daring to pull off the vintage look, and if you are going to go for it, why not do it properly and get a truely unique and authentic vintage product!?
