Woody Allen's glasses: the glasses of a seducer

A tribute to the director and his iconic glasses.

Do you know much about Woody Allen's glasses? Today I want to honor one of the directors (and his glasses) who has had a prolific effect on the American film industry: Allan Stewart Konigsberg. Haven’t you heard of him? You might know his stage name: Woody Allen.

Woody Allen's glasses[caption The glasses he wears now are the same thick-rimmed style of the 50s.]

Woody Allen is a director, screenwriter, comedian, actor and musician born in New York 77 years ago. During his long career he has won four Academy Awards and is known worldwide for titles that have marked the history of cinema, such as "Annie Hall", "The Purple Rose of Cairo" and "Bananas". His films are critical, ironic and bitter about society, and always question aspects of life such as relationships, family, institutions, etc…

Preferring to learn by self-study rather than college, he began his career very young, and was soon making more money than both his parents combined. He became know for his practical jokes and witty humour, and that became essentially how he earnt his living as a writer, initially for television shows

Apart from his impressive career, Woody Allen is also known for his enormous horn-rimmed glasses. This style, today considered ‘vintage’ and fashionable, especially among celebrities (have a read here), just goes to show that Woody Allen's glasses style was vintage before vintage existed.

For over 50 years, Woody Allen has not taken off his enormous, horn-rimmed glasses with thick, square frames. They are an essential accessory for him because of his poor eyesight, but have also become part of his persona. They are so iconic that Penelope Cruz keeps a pair that he gave her after the filming of Vicky Cristina Barcelona as a keepsake.

Woody Allen's glasses[caption Penelope Cruz became one of his muses during the filming of Vicky Cristina Barcelona, where she won the Best Supporting Actress award from numerous organisations.]

Woody Allen’s appearance has always been somewhat dated. His glasses as well as his classic beige trousers are far from the seductive style you imagine Hollywood directors to wear. However, throughout his life he has always enjoyed the company of beautiful women. Not only has he been married three times, he has also had romantic relationships with many women, including actresses Mia Farrow and Diane Keaton. His latest relationship puts has meant he is considered part of one of the most eccentric couples from film – he is married to Soon-Yi Previn, Mia Farrow’s adopted daughter. She is around 37 years his junior. So, it is quick wit and sense of humour that women are attracted to? Or are they seduced by Woody Allen's glasses?

Woody Allen's glasses[caption He was just as much of a seducer with his glasses then as he is now...]

His style and glasses are just the same now as they were back then! Although his hair is a bit whiter... [caption His style and glasses are just the same now as they were back then! Although his hair is a bit whiter...]
